Hyehwa-dong Catholic Church
혜화동성당
Church · Lee Hee-tae · c. 1960 · Jongno-gu
Address: 서울 종로구 혜화로 (혜화동 로터리)
A plain block and a square bell tower by the self-taught architect Lee Hee-tae, worked out in simple proportions rather than ornament (the tower is as tall as the church is wide). The front is a big relief of the Last Judgement carved by leading Korean sculptors of the time. One of the best early modern churches in Seoul, a short walk from Hyehwamun gate.
Getting in: Working parish church; the exterior and forecourt are open, step inside quietly outside Mass times. 5 minutes from Hyehwa Station.
A lesser-known building that architecture fans seek out; facts from the pages under Sources, summary written by us.
