Haneul Park: Landfill to Grassland
Oil tanks turned arts park, a hilltop of silver grass and the riverside
≈4.0 km · ≈60 min walking · Moderate · Mapo-gu · Start: World Cup Stadium station · End: World Cup Stadium station
Seoul's old rubbish mountains, now parks: see the oil reservoirs reused as halls and a stage, climb the 291 steps to the grass-covered summit of Haneul Park, then walk down to the river at Nanji.
Stops
- Oil Tank Culture Park (문화비축기지)
Five fuel reservoirs from the 1970s cut into the hillside, opened in 2017 as a park with halls and an amphitheatre made from the tanks' own steel. A landmark of Seoul's reuse projects. - Haneul Park (하늘공원)
The flat top of a former landfill (1978–1993), now a grassland of silver grass with views over the river and the World Cup Stadium. - Nanji Hangang Park (난지한강공원)
A wide riverside park with a camping ground and an ecological wetland.
Best time: Mid-October to November, when the silver grass on Haneul Park is in plumes. Go up for sunset.
Tips
- A shuttle (paid) runs up to Haneul Park if you'd rather skip the stairs.
- From Nanji, take the bus back to World Cup Stadium or walk about 30 minutes.
Access
Haneul Park is at the top of a former landfill: the direct way up is a zigzag stair of about 290 steps. A paid electric shuttle runs up the access road from the car park at the bottom.
