Samcheong-ro Galleries
Modern landmark to the palace edge
≈1.3 km · ≈20 min walking · Easy · Jongno-gu · Start: Anguk station · End: Anguk station
Start at a 1971 icon of Korean modernism, cross into the national museum's courtyards, and finish at a mesh-wrapped gallery among hanok roofs.
Stops
- Arario Museum in Space (아라리오뮤지엄 인 스페이스)
The former Space Group building (1971–77), a key work of Korean modern architecture. Its dark brick rooms and half-level floors now hold a private art collection. - MMCA Seoul (국립현대미술관 서울관)
Instead of one big object, the museum is a group of low buildings and courtyards that keeps the scale of the palace neighbourhood around it. - Kukje Gallery K3 (국제갤러리 K3)
A plain gallery box wrapped in a stainless-steel chain-mail mesh of about 510,000 hand-welded rings. The mesh softens the corners so the building reads like a draped object.
Best time: Daytime, Tuesday to Sunday. Many private galleries close on Mondays.
Tips
- Admission to the MMCA's permanent spaces is free; special exhibitions are ticketed.
- Samcheong-ro continues north to Samcheong Park if you want a shady detour.
Access
Flat pavements along Samcheong-ro. MMCA and Kukje have lifts; Arario Museum in Space keeps the original split levels and narrow stairs inside.
