Myeongdong: Department Stores to Nogari Alley

Shinsegae's 1930 building, a 1936 theatre, the shopping streets, the cathedral and beer in Euljiro

15:00–19:45 · ≈2.8 km · ≈40 min walking · Easy · Jung-gu · Start: Hoehyeon station · End: Euljiro 3-ga station

Seoul's main shopping district has older bones than it looks. Start in Shinsegae's 1930 department store building, see the 1936 Myeongdong Theater, shop and snack along Myeongdong's streets, climb to Korea's first brick Gothic cathedral, eat noodles and dumplings, and finish with beer and dried pollock in Euljiro's print-shop alley.

Stops

  1. Shinsegae Main Store (신세계백화점 본점)
Built in 1930 as the Seoul branch of Japan's Mitsukoshi store, Korea's first department store. The stone-faced original building is still the core of Shinsegae's flagship.
  2. Myeongdong Theater (명동예술극장)
A corner-sited cinema opened in 1936 as the Meiji-za. It became Seoul's national theatre in the 1960s, then the office of a finance company after 1973, until the culture ministry bought it back in 2009. The restored facade now stands out among Myeong-dong's shopfronts, and it is a working drama theatre again.
  3. Myeong-dong (명동)
Seoul's main shopping streets: cosmetics flagships, fashion chains and, from late afternoon, rows of street-food stalls. Many shops refund tax on the spot.
  4. Myeongdong Cathedral (서울 명동성당)
Korea's first Gothic Revival church (1898), in red and grey brick. The plaza underneath has a small food hall and shops.
  5. Euljiro Nogari Alley (을지로 노가리골목)
A lane of beer halls where plastic tables spill into the street every evening, serving draft beer and grilled dried pollack (nogari).

Best time: Any afternoon into the evening; Myeongdong's street-food stalls set up from about 16:00. Nogari Alley is busiest on weekday evenings.

Tips

Access

Level streets; the department store has lifts. The cathedral is up a short slope with a ramp. Nogari Alley is a narrow, busy lane.
